CHICAGOâS WICKEDEST PEOPLE
Satan (impatiently) to Newcomer: The trouble with you Chicago people is, that you think you are the best people down here; whereas you are merely the most numerous.
âMark Twain, âPuddânhead Wilsonâs New Calendar,â 1897
Chicago is a place of unusual people and strange characters, but the vice districts of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries produced a larger than normal number of eccentric figures. Many of them have become Chicago legends, and in almost every case, the red-light districts of the Windy City could not have existed without them.
